The Oregon Department of Transportation announced today it will not extend the studded tire season. Along with the state of Washington, Oregon is staying with the requirement that the last day to legally have studded tires on vehicles is March 31. ODOT staff reviewed current conditions and weather forecasts for the entire state in making the decision.
"We know winter driving conditions will still occur in mountain passes and other parts of the state," said Luci Moore, ODOT State Maintenance and Operations engineer. "ODOT is fully staffed to aggressively take care of the roads, and drivers still need to be prepared for winter driving conditions."
Drivers with studded tires on their vehicles after March 31 can be charged with a Class C traffic violation, which carries a maximum $145 fine.
Other types of traction tires are available to those who drive in Oregon’s snow zones. These traction tires meet Rubber Manufacturers Association standards for use in severe snow conditions and carry a special symbol on the tire sidewall showing a three-peaked mountain and snowflake.
ODOT also reminds motorists traveling in the mountains to carry chains.
