ODOT wants to clear up any confusion motorists are experiencing, after Washington State decided to advance the start of the studded tire season in Washington. The studded tire season will begin on the normal date established in Oregon law, Nov. 1.

Drivers who consider travel through mountain passes before the studded tire season begins must be prepared to use chains or other types of traction tires—or simply not travel.

The difference in approaches between the two neighboring states can be attributed to different weather conditions and different travel patterns.

ODOT encourages drivers to consider other types of traction tires or chains because studded tires cause at least $42 million damage each year on city streets, county roads and state highways. ODOT’s budget allows crews to repair only about $11 million of this damage each year.
Other types of traction tires are available. Traction tires that meet Rubber Manufacturers Association standards for use in severe snow conditions carry a special symbol on the tire sidewall showing a three-peaked mountain and snowflake. Research shows these tires provide better traction than studded tires when used on bare pavement and most winter driving conditions.

Drivers with studded tires on their vehicles in Oregon outside the Nov. 1 through March 31 studded tire season can be charged with a Class C traffic violation, which currently carries a minimum $190 fine.
