At Home

Gas FireplaceDirect Vent Gas Fireplaces draw combustion air from the outdoors and vent directly through a wall without a masonry chimney. They can circulate heated air and be controlled by a thermostat. They are an energy efficient alternative to open fireplaces, which draw room air up the chimney - often removing more heat from the house than they produce.

Certain energy-efficient direct vent gas fireplaces installed in your Oregon home may be eligible for a Residential Energy Tax Credit.
RETC Qualifications

Any fireplace purchased must meet certain qualifications to earn a Residential Energy Tax Credit, valued at 50 percent of the cost of the device or $1,500, whichever is less. See the RETC Rate Chart for more information about the tax credit rate and emissions requirements.

Complete qualifications are outlined in the RETC Application.

Direct Vent Gas Fireplaces

Your direct vent gas fireplace must have a Canadian EnerGuide  efficiency rating of 70 percent or higher. Your manufacturer's manual should list the number, labeled as "CSA P.4.1-02" or just "P4."

The Energy Trust of Oregon  also publishes a list of high-efficiency fireplaces if you need a starting point to find a qualifying model.

Models must include an electronic ignition that is either an intermittent or pilot on-demand system, which saves energy when not in use during warmer months.

RETC Program Sunset

The RETC program is scheduled to sunset on December 31, 2017.

To qualify for a tax credit:
  • RETC devices must be purchased by December 31, 2017;
  • Devices must be operational by April 1, 2018; and
  • ODOE must receive your application no later than June 1, 2018.
If you plan to transfer your tax credit, ODOE must receive the pass-through application on or before June 1, 2018. Please review the RETC Administrative Rules for more information about program eligibility and requirements.

RETC Application

After verifying that your new fireplace meets the criteria, complete and sign the tax credit application. Send the completed application, including information about any other incentives you are receiving, to the Oregon Department of Energy. Please include a copy of your dated receipt or proof of payment, which must include the make and model of your device.
