OMMP Quick Response (QR) Code Verification


A QR code (Quick Response code) is a type of two-dimensional bar code made up of black and white squares or pixels set in a grid that is used to provide easy access to an online website through the use of a digital camera on a smartphone or tablet. OMMP is adding QR codes to mailed temporary receipt letters and registration cards to enhance security and prevent fraud. This will allow anyone, such as OLCC retail shops, to verify whether the receipt or card is valid.  

All OMMP mailed temporary receipt letters and cards issued March 1, 2024, will contain a QR Code that may be scanned to verify whether the receipt or card is valid or not. Temporary receipts obtained by applying online already contain a QR code that may be scanned to verify whether the receipt is valid or not. 

Cards issued prior to March 1, 2024, that have not expired and do not contain a QR code may still be verified. Mailed temporary receipts that do not contain a QR code are not able to be verified but are considered valid for 30 days from the date printed at the top of the letter.

What information is revealed when the QR code is scanned?
The only information revealed is whether the receipt or card number is valid or not valid. No personal or other information about the cardholder is shown.

How is the QR code to be used?

The QR code is scanned using a camera on a phone or tablet. Tap the link that appears and it will take you to an OMMP validation website and allow you to enter the number found on the receipt or card. It is important to scan the QR code on each receipt or card and not just leave the website open as this could result in receiving inaccurate results.

Why is it important to scan the QR code instead of just having the verification web page open?

Mailed temporary receipts and registration cards have different web pages to verify the validity of the OMMP registration. By scanning the QR code, you will be directed to the correct web page to confirm validity.

Is there any change to the online temporary receipts?

No. Online temporary receipts already contain a QR code that, when scanned, will immediately provide verification that the online temporary receipt is valid or not valid.

Will additional hardware be required to use the QR code?

No. A smart phone or a QR code scanner and internet is all that is needed. 

What if I don't agree with the results of the QR code validation?

It is recommended the QR code is scanned again, and the number is re-entered. Review the effective date of the card to verify if it is in fact valid. Cards can be issued before they are effective. If the cardholder does not agree with the results, only the cardholder may contact OMMP for assistance.

Can OMMP just verify my registration status over the phone? 

No. OMMP is not able to confirm registrant information over the phone or email. 

Can I just give an OLCC retail shop my card number to verify my OMMP status if I don't have my card on me?

No. An OMMP patient or caregiver must show their OMMP registration card and government ID each time they enter a retail shop to not be charged the marijuana sales tax.

Are dispensaries and OLCC retail shops required to use the QR code to verify all temporary receipts and registration cards?

No. The QR code was added as a resource for dispensaries and OLCC retail shops to use to verify OMMP registration. It is not a requirement that it be used. Mailed temporary receipts and registration cards will still have valid dates printed that may be used to verify OMMP registration. 

My registration card was issued before QR codes were added. Can I get a new card?

Cards that have not expired and do not contain a QR code may still be verified by entering the card number into the correct link found at the top of this webpage. If cardholders want a new card with the QR code, they must make the request in writing and pay the appropriate replacement card fee.
