Reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses

Will I be reimbursed for my out-of-pocket expenses?

Yes, if your claim is accepted. The insurer may require reasonable documentation to support your reimbursement request.

Note: During the time your claim is being evaluated (deferred), the insurer is not required to reimburse you for any prescriptions or other expenses such as transportation costs for visits to the doctor’s office. Keep receipts for these expenses as they will be paid by the insurer, in addition to related medical bills, if your claim is accepted.

How do I get reimbursed for my out-of-pocket expenses?

You must submit a written request for reimbursement to your insurer within two years of incurring the expense. The written request should provide sufficient documentation to show the costs are related to the accepted compensable injury or disease.

  • Prescriptions will be reimbursed based on actual costs.
  • Mileage reimbursement will be based on reasonable mileage when using a private vehicle or the actual cost when using public transit.

How long does the insurer have to process my reimbursement request?

If your claim has been accepted, an insurer has 30 days from the receipt of your request to timely process your reimbursement or provide a written explanation of the reason for nonpayment.

Will I be reimbursed for expenses to attend an independent medical examination?

Yes. The insurer must reimburse you for costs related to you attending an independent medical examination, regardless of the acceptance, deferral, or denial of the claim. If you need advance payment of your cost to attend the examination, be sure to request the advance as soon as possible.
