Use Direct File Oregon to file your personal income tax return electronically for free directly with the Oregon Department of Revenue.

Direct File Oregon is an interview-based software that allows most full year residents to file Form OR-40 original and amended returns through Revenue Online for free.  Direct File Oregon is not currently linked with the IRS Direct File.  You will need to file your federal return separately with the IRS before filing your Oregon return with Direct File Oregon through Revenue Online.

Why file with Direct File Oregon through Revenue Online?

Using Direct File Oregon through Revenue Online is free to use and can help prevent some errors. Direct File Oregon provides some guidance for common deductions and credits, performs math calculations and computes tax, and provides links to instructions. If you have a complex tax situation, this may not be for you. Please make sure to familiarize yourself with Oregon Individual Income Tax Instruction booklet and our Publication OR-17 before using this filing method.

Who can file with Direct File Oregon?

  • Direct File Oregon currently supports original and amended Form OR-40 personal income tax returns.

Direct File Oregon does not currently support:

  • Full year resident taxpayers who file both a federal return and an “as if" federal return.
  • Full year resident taxpayers who file a federal Form 1040NR.
  • Nonresidents (Form OR-40-N).
  • Part-year residents (Form OR-40-P).

If you don't qualify to file your return with Direct File Oregon through Revenue Online, or you prefer to use a form-base software product, check to see if you can use on of your free tax preparation services or use one of our approved tax software partners (prices vary).

Even if you don't qualify to use Direct File Oregon this year, we will be improving and adding more functionality in the future.

If you're not sure if you need to file a return, please review "Do I need to file an Oregon Return?" in the Form OR-40 Instruction booklet or Publication OR-17. Even if you're not required to file, you may still receive a refund if you qualify for the Oregon Earned Income Credit or the Oregon Kids Credit.

What you need to file a return through Revenue Online

You will need the following information to file your return:

  • Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) of everyone being claimed on your Oregon return, as well as date of birth.
  • A copy of your federal tax return, including schedules.
  • Copies of your Form W-2s and/or Form 1099s.
  • A valid email address and phone number.
  • Your adjusted gross income or Oregon taxable income amounts from one of the last three returns filed for verification purposes.

Make sure to submit your return by the due date, April 15, 2024, to avoid late filing penalties.

What if you are filing for the first time?

If you are a first-time filer, or have not filed a return with the Oregon Department of Revenue within the last three years, you will need the following information to file your return:

  • Your driver's license, state identification number, or phone number.
  • Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) of everyone being claimed on your Oregon return, as well as date of birth.
  • A copy of your federal tax return, including schedules.
  • Copies of your Form W-2s and/or Form 1099s.
  • A valid email address.

You can file your return without a Revenue Online account. However, some features are limited. 

On the homepage, scroll down to the "Individuals" section and select File Form OR-40. 

Why sign up for a Revenue Online account? 

Although you can file your return without signing up for a Revenue Online account, there are benefits to creating an account before you file your return. Some of these benefits include:

  • Some information will pre-populate on your return.
  • Your return will automatically save as you progress.
  • You can amend your return if needed.
  • Returns filed while logged in do not require a confirmation number to edit, complete, or to view/print your submitted return. You can simply access the return through your account.
  • If your federal adjusted gross income was $0 or less for the past three tax returns, or you received failure to file assessments for the last three tax years, you must log into Revenue Online to use Direct File.
