Community Class Registration

South Slough offers a variety of programs for all ages to develop a better understanding of estuaries and coastal watersheds. Programs may be cancelled due to low enrollment or hazardous weather. All cancellations must be received with 48 hours of the start of a program to receive a refund.

NOAA Planet Stewards, Elkhorn Slough and South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserves (NERRS) are hosting a simultaneous three-day workshop for educators about the impacts of global climate change on estuaries and their adjacent communities along the Pacific Coast, and how to engage their schools and communities to take action to address regional impacts of this global phenomenon. 

Participants will spend three days at either Oregon’s South Slough or California’s Elkhorn Slough NERR learning climate change and watershed content, taking part in field experiences, and learning how to incorporate these topics and stewardship actions into their classrooms and communities. 

*This workshop is planned for in-person learning. Depending on Covid-19 safety guidelines at the time of the workshop, an alternate, virtual experience may be required. All registrants will be kept apprised of programmatic changes.

Workshop topics include:
Climate change science and climate change activities that meet NGSS Citizen science and hands-on stewardship to inspire youth to address regional environmental impacts, and mobilize action in their communities

Workshop features:
Opportunities to learn from and interact with subject matter experts;
Hands-on field investigations with a NOAA researcher;
In-depth information about estuaries and other coastal systems;
Activities and lessons designed around climate change topics and issues;
Light continental breakfast, lunch, and snacks are included each day of the workshop;
Educators will receive resources for their class and field work;
Stipends will be provided for all attendees upon full completion of the workshop.

This event is scheduled for June 17-19, 2022 at the South Slough Reserve Visitor Center in Charleston, OR. There are a limited number of spaces available for this event. You must register here to reserve a seat at the workshop! Do it today!

$40 includes educational resources, tools and materials for the classroom, coffee, lunch, and snacks each day. Participating educators may choose to receive 21 Professional Development Units (PDUs).

Description

​Explore the beauty of the South Slough Reserve while helping care for Darlingtonia and Sundew by removing brush shading these sun-loving carnivorous plants. Afterward, join us for lunch to learn about volunteering opportunities, including removing invasive species, maintaining trails, and supporting coastal research.

Schedule: 
10 a.m. – 12 p.m. – Volunteering with habitat restoration
12 p.m. – 1p.m. – Lunch and learn about volunteering. Lunch donated by Coos Head Food Co-op and Farmstead Bread.

Registration is required. FREE event.

Description

We rent kayaks !!  Come experience the rich cultural and natural history of the South Slough on a trail that flows with the tide. During the five-mile paddle, experienced guides will show you areas of the Reserve rarely seen by visitors.  Bring your own kayak, canoe and gear or rent one of our sit-on-top kayaks, PFD, and paddle.  Feet and legs may get wet and muddy at launch points.  Driver and shuttle will be provided.   Meet at the Distant Water Fleet Parking Lot in Charleston next to Qualman’s Oysters.   (There is a 48 hour cancellation policy in order to receive a FULL refund.) Programs may be cancelled due to low enrollment or hazardous weather.  Please leave pets at home.

Description

​The South Slough Reserve is teaming up with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife for a family-friendly clamming workshop. Knowledgeable instructors will identify a variety of edible species, proper digging techniques and how to prepare and cook clams. Pre-registration is required, and everyone age 12 and older will need to purchase an Oregon shellfish license in advance of the class. Old clothes and boots are a must !   Meet in the parking lot by the O.D.F.W. office, 63538 Boat Basin Road, Charleston  OR  97420. [Max. – 25] FREE  but pre-registration is required.

Description

​Adults and children of all ages are invited to a family-friendly hiking day, planned as part of the annual summer reading program at the Coos Bay, Bandon, and North Bend Public Libraries. You can hike the many trails at the Reserve at your own pace or join a guided tour of a two-mile loop. Then, cool down with some ice cream provided by South Slough Reserve. After the event is over, you can continue exploring the coastal forests, rivers, and tide flats that make up the beauty of South Slough Reserve.

 
Attendees may come directly to the Reserve. Coos Bay Public Library is also offering bus transportation from the library to this event for pre-registered attendees.
 
To reserve your seat on the bus from the Coos Bay Public Library to South Slough Reserve, follow this link to pre-register by Friday, July 15. Please do not pre-register if you plan on driving directly to the Reserve.

Description

​Experience South Slough Reserve by canoe and foot as a naturalist takes you on a one-hour guided tour of areas rarely seen by visitors. One half of this event will take place on foot – a 2-mile hike that’s lead by a naturalist, and the second half will take place on the water in a large canoe. Along the way, you will learn about the rich cultural and natural history of the Reserve, while take in the sights and sounds of the flora, fauna, and features that make up this important protected area.
