About

We are taking a system-wide approach to improving safety along OR 8. Several upcoming projects will upgrade crosswalks, intersections, bus stops, curb ramps, lighting and signs. One of these safety projects is on OR 8 where it intersects with OR 219 (or S 1st Avenue) in downtown Hillsboro. This section of OR 8 is split into two one-way streets— SW Oak Street in the eastbound direction and SW Baseline Street in the westbound direction. To reduce crashes and improve safety, we paved both intersections and made other improvements that included:
  • New traffic signals and signs. Improving hardware can reduce crashes by making signal indications more visible. Installing signs reduces crashes, particularly side-swipe collisions, by making it clearer to drivers which lane to be in. Pedestrian countdown timers help pedestrians make better decisions about how much time is left to cross the road, reducing their chances for unsafe crossings.

  • Improved lighting. Improving intersection lighting can reduce nighttime crashes due to better visibility.

  • Upgraded ADA curb ramps. Upgrading ADA curb ramps will meet new design standards and provide better access for people who rely on them.

  • New southbound left-turn lane at the S 1st Avenue and SW Oak Street intersection. Providing a left turn lane and designated left turn signal will reduce the potential for crashes at this intersection.
