Mission Street: 17th Street to I-5 North Ramps

Design Phase

Region 2: Willamette Valley and Northwest Oregon (Salem, Marion)

Adding new traffic light systems to improve the flow of traffic.

Enlarged project mapOpen House IconMission Street has seven signalized intersections that are historical high crash locations for Region 2. Most of the crashes are due to congestion. Our goal with this project is to reduce some congestion by using newer signal timing technology.

In order to improve the flow of traffic on Mission Street, we will replace any damaged traffic signal sensors, as well as install:

  • New traffic controllers.

  • Traffic detectors.

  • Technology that works with traffic conditions and signals to keep traffic moving smoothly.

This technology will adjust when a green light starts and ends to follow the current traffic pattern. This will benefit these intersections because it will help reduce congestion and fuel consumption, automatically adapt to unexpected changes in traffic conditions and improve travel time reliability.

The installation of the new equipment will occur at night and should have minimal impacts to traffic flow. If lane closures are needed, the work zone will be controlled by flaggers.
