We are designing a project to repair culverts along I-84 between Troutdale and Hood River.

Columbia River Gorge Construction: I-84 and U.S. 30 Historic Columbia River Highway

Impacts

Schedule

Design: 2019-2021
Construction: late 2021/2022

Details

About

This section of highway is designated as an ODOT Priority Route and culverts along this section of highway and culverts need to be repaired or replaced to extend the lifespan of the culvert, and maintain safety and operations of the highway. The culverts will likely be lined using a cured-in-place method to minimize construction impact. This technique avoids excavation of the road.

Location

I-84 | Corbett to East Hood River

Cost and Funding

Project cost: $3,659,320

Benefits

  • Maintain and extend the life of infrastructure: This work will extend the life of the transportation system by repairing and conducting maintenance activities on culverts that run under the existing roads.
  • Safety: Properly operating culverts manage water flow, minimizing flooding and erosion near roads. This improves safety for the traveling public.

Additional Information

The Columbia River Gorge is one of Oregon’s seven wonders – home to the first highway in the Pacific Northwest, sweeping vistas and rich history. And for more than 100 years, it’s been an important corridor for freight movements, both in the water and on the road.

Over the next several years, we have many construction projects planned on Interstate 84 between Interstate 205 and Hood River, and on the Historic Columbia River Highway between Troutdale and Hood River.

Each project brings benefits to residents, businesses and visitors by increasing safety, extending the lifespan of the highways or completing a gap in walking and biking infrastructure.
