Malin Safe Routes to School

Design Phase

Region 4: Central Oregon (Malin, Klamath)

This project will improve pedestrian safety and provide a safe route for children to walk to Malin Elementary School.

Impacts

Schedule

Bid: March 2027

Construction: April 2027-July 2027

Details

About

Highway 50 in Malin lacks sidewalks through town and crossings are wide and inconspicuous. Children must walk on the shoulders of the highway to get to school and the crossings are difficult to use. This project will install new sidewalk and curb extensions through the corridor, and enhance the existing marked crossings at 3rd Street, Railroad Avenue, and Lakeview Avenue. Crossing enhancements would include high-visibility striping, pedestrian crossing signs, and illumination, providing safe pedestrian access to this area.

Location

N/A |

Klamath Falls-Malin Highway (Hwy 50) in Malin.

Cost and Funding

Total Estimate: $4,824,449

Benefits

“Safe Routes to School” refers to efforts that improve, educate, or encourage children safely walking (by foot or mobility device) or biking to school. The Oregon Department of Transportation has two main types of Safe Routes to School programs: Construction and Education and technical assistance. Construction programs focus on making sure safe walking and biking routes exist through investments in crossings, sidewalks and bike lanes, flashing beacons and the like.
