COVID-19 public health emergency

In response to guidance from public health officials, the Board is not providing in-person services at this time at its office except by prior appointment. This is in accordance with guidelines for protecting public health and also due to potential workforce limitations tied to the COVID-19 public health emergency. Some Board services can be completed online, and most can be completed via email or phone, thereby eliminating the need for most in-person visits. Please contact Board staff at or 503-566-2837 if you need assistance.
You can access current information about the COVID-19 emergency and sign up for email updates about COVID-19 at the Oregon Health Authority website.  Information on assistance available for Oregon small businesses impacted by the emergency can be found at the Business Oregon website.

Board adopts temporary rules related to exam administration

On May 29, 2020, the Board adopted temporary rule amendments to four of its rules addressing exam administration in order to address issues associated with exam postponements or cancellations. The temporary rules apply to examination administrations scheduled for 2020, and the rules are in effect through November 27, 2020. The temporary administrative order contains the amended rule language and the justification and need for this rulemaking action. The Board may pursue permanent rulemaking to make these or similar rule amendments permanent but has not initiated that process at this time. The Board would provide notice of any future proposal for permanent rulemaking.

Spring 2020 exam administration cancelled due to COVID-19

The exam administration scheduled for Friday March 20, 2020 in Salem, OR was cancelled. This cancellation applied to the national exam (ASBOG Fundamentals of Geology and Practice of Geology sections) and the Oregon/Washington joint exam for engineering geology. The Board is currently working with exam candidates impacted by this decision on forwarding them to a future exam administration or with refunds. Through June 24, 2020, the Board is also accepting new applications to sit for the exam in Oct. 2020.  The Board will be monitoring the COVID-19 situation throughout the summer and is cautiously optimistic about having the ability to proceed with the next exam administration, although likely with new mitigation measures in place to protect candidates, proctors, and staff.

Board 2019 legislation passes

SB43Enrolled.pdf (authority to develop continuing education program as part of geologist registration)
SB44Enrolled.pdf (authority to revise qualifications for Certified Engineering Geologist, miscellaneous administrative updates)
Senate Bills (SB) 43 and 44 were submitted by Governor Kate Brown on behalf of the Board for consideration during the 2019 session of the Oregon Legislature. Both bills have now been passed by the Oregon Legislature and signed by Governor Brown. The bills are effective 1/1/2020. Neither bill makes immediate changes to registration requirements. OSBGE will need to pursue rulemaking in 2020 in order to implement changes authorized by SB 43 and 44.
