Maintain Registration

How to renew registration

You can renew your registration online using the Board's Registrant Portal. If you are unable to use the online system, you may contact the Board office for help.

Annual renewal dates

Every registrant has a set annual renewal date. This date is the last day of the month in which you first registered. For example, if your registration began on May 16, your renewal date would be May 31 the following year and then every year there after that you maintain registration. If you do not renew by your renewal date, your registration will lapse the next day—June 1 in this example. A registrant with lapsed registration is not authorized to publicly practice geology in Oregon.

Renewal window and notices

The renewal window opens 45 days before your renewal date. The Board sends courtesy renewal notices by email. Registrants are advised to always keep a current email address on file with the Board. However, even if you do not receive the notice, you are still responsible for renewing your registration on time each year.

Update contact information

Registrants must always keep their contact and employment information up to date with the Board. This requirement applies both during annual renewal and throughout the year.

Updating during annual renewal process

When renewing registration each year, registrants need to check that their contact and employment details are correct. If there are any changes, they should update their records right away.

Reporting changes outside of the renewal process

If contact or employment information changes at any other time, registrants must inform the Board within 30 days. This helps ensure the Board's records are always accurate and that important messages reach the right place.

Methods for updating information

Active registrants can update their details anytime using the Registrant Portal. Another option is to send a letter or email with the changes to the Board office.

Late renewal and lapsed registration

If you do not complete your renewal and pay applicable fees by your renewal date, your registration will lapse. To use your registration title or publicly practice geology in Oregon, you must have an active registration. If your registration has lapsed, you may be able to have it returned to active status using one of several options, which depend on how much time has passed since your renewal date.

Renewal date is less than 179 days ago

Option 1a: renew online

If your renewal date was less than 179 days ago, you can renew late online through the Registrant Portal. A late fee will be added to your renewal charge.

Option 1b: renew by mail or in person

In this situation, you can also renew late by sending the following to the Board office:

  • Written updates to your contact information
  • A signed continuing education certification
  • Fees paid by check, money order, or online (outside of the online renewal application)

Renewal date 179 days or more ago

Option 2a: reinstate online

If your renewal date was 179 days or more ago, you can request reinstatement to active status using the Registrant Portal.

Option 2b: reinstatement by written request

If you can't use the online system, send a written request to the Board office that includes:

  • A brief written description of why the registration became lapsed
  • Updates to your contact information
  • Documentation of 8 hours of continuing education
  • Fees paid by check, money order, or online payment (outside the online renewal application)

Other important information

More than one year since renewal

If it's been more than one calendar year since your last renewal, you may want to contact the Board office to find out the total fees due. Back renewal fees will apply.

More than five years since renewal

IMPORTANT: If you have not renewed for five consecutive years, your registration is permanently expired and cannot be restored. You must apply as a new applicant and meet all current requirements for education, examination, and experience.
