Permit Condition Static Water Level Reporting

What is this condition and why is it important?

Many ground-water rights contain a condition that requires the water right holder to periodically measure the static water level in their well(s) and report that data to the Department. These water levels help water users and the Department understand local and regional groundwater levels and trends and identify water management actions needed to sustainably manage our groundwater resources.

To submit water levels, please fill out our online form using the button below:

How to measure and report

To view your reporting requirements, you can search for your water right in Water Rights Information System (WRIS).

Your water right outlines:

1. What information to submit
2. Who is qualified to take measurement
3. How many years are necessary to report
4. When to take & and how to submit the static measurement

The Department's forms must be used to report the data.

Failure to report may lead to enforcement. While we send courtesy reminder letters to permit holders with water level reporting requirements, it is up to the permit holder to submit a required annual static water level measurement regardless of whether a reminder letter was received.

Resources to get your Static Water Levels measured

Every permit is different, but most permits require the measurement to be taken by a certified water rights examiner (CWRE), registered professional geologist, registered professional engineer, licensed well constructor, or licensed pump installer. To verify qualified water level measurers for your permit, go to WRIS and read the reporting requirements laid out in the permit document.
