State employees: Take the train!

Use the SPOTS card for state travel on Amtrak Cascades

It's easier than ever to travel on the Amtrak Cascades passenger train in the Willamette Valley. You (or your travel coordinator) can use the SPOTS card to purchase your ticket.

Why book your travel using the SPOTS card?
  • No out of pocket expense for you - so no waiting for that expense check!
  • Office staff can make the travel arrangements for you, if applicable.
Just visit www.amtrak.com or call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245).

Take the train for going to work and back

There are several benefits to commuting using the Amtrak Cascades/POINT Bus service.

  • Relax – and avoid the congestion!
  • No worries about parking. The Salem Amtrak Station is about 1/2 mile from the Capitol Building.
  • Save when you buy a multi-ride pass. There are monthly multi-ride discount passes and 10-rides-in-45-days discount passes.
In addition, state employees can pay for commuting costs with the pre-tax commuter account, where you have a certain amount deducted from your paycheck before taxes, then submit the receipts for reimbursement. It's pre-tax, so you save on taxes! And, you can sign up for the commuter account anytime during the year.

See the savings, experience the convenience

Two types of multi-ride discount passes are available: the 10-ride pass and the monthly pass. A 'ride' is any one-way direction, so roundtrip would count as two of the ten rides. See AmtrakCascades.com for the latest.

Using the train and the bus together

The Amtrak Cascades and Cascades POINT bus work together to create convenient options for traveling to and from work and meetings. Just to give you an idea, here are some examples:

Portland to Salem: Take the 6 a.m. train from Portland to Salem; be at work by 7:15 a.m., and then return to Portland on the 4:15 p.m. bus.

Eugene, Albany or Salem to Portland: Got a full day meeting in Portland? Take the 5:30 a.m. train from Eugene (6:42 from Salem) and return on the train that leaves Portland at 6:05 p.m.

Shorter trips: Take the 10:40 a.m. bus from Portland for an afternoon meeting in Eugene, and return to Portland on the train that leaves Eugene at 4 p.m.

With Amtrak Cascades and the Cascades POINT bus working together, the options are nearly limitless! And you can let someone else do the driving. What's more, when you take the train, you can enjoy a hot cup of coffee and a snack from the Bistro while you use the Wi-Fi and relax in roomy, comfortable seats. Check out our current schedule for times.
