Demographic Data

Return to the State of Equity main page

To provide context for the State of Equity report, we explored the availability of demographic data for Communities of Color in Oregon so we could better understand population characteristics and their potential needs.

To this end, we used data from the American Community Survey (ACS), which surveys a sample of households every year. The ACS is a critical component of the Census Bureau's decennial census program.

The spreadsheets listed below summarize the ACS data for Oregonians by race/ethnicity.

Snapshot Data: 3-Year Surveys

Community Trend Data

Below are data and selected graphs from two 3-year trend data sets from the ACS. Please read the Introduction Page for data notes on these trends.

Technical Notes

The following racial/ethnic categories were used:

  • Hispanic/Latino
  • Non-Latino African American
  • Non-Latino American Indian / Alaska Native
  • Non-Latino Asian
  • Non-Latino Pacific Islander
  • Non-Latino White
  • Non-Latino Multiracial
  • Non-Latino Other race

Using these categories, no individual is in more than one category. If a person identifies as Hispanic/Latino, they are in the "Hispanic/Latino" category and not the other racial/ethnic categories. Unfortunately, ACS does not collect "primary race" (i.e., race the person says best represents them). Therefore, the category "Multiracial" includes all persons who identify more than one race. If someone identifies as "African American" and "White," they are in the "Multiracial" category; they are not in the "African American" or "White" categories.
