The Oregon Board of Licensed Social Workers (BLSW) is considering an alternative pathway to clinical licensure. It appears that the current clinical licensure exam is a barrier to some clinical social workers achieving full licensure. Many states, including Illinois, Minnesota, and Utah, offer alternative pathways to clinical licensure. Some of these pathways involve increased supervision hours, either in lieu of the exam or after failing to pass it, jurisprudence tests, or the complete abolition of the exam. As such, the BLSW is exploring alternative pathways to licensure that are more equitable for all social workers and maintain the integrity of the profession.
