(Salem, Ore.) - Ashley Carson Cottingham, director of the Department of Human Services’ Office of Aging and People with Disabilities, will join State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Fred Steele to serve as his deputy agency director. In her new role, Carson Cottingham will work for Steele in leading the state’s Office of the Long-Term Care Ombudsman, which advocates for individuals living in state-licensed, long-term care facilities including nursing and assisted living facilities as well as adult foster homes.

Today the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) was named a defendant in a lawsuit from Disability Rights Oregon and A Better Childhood. The lawsuit calls for an increase in the foster care system capacity to ensure every child has an appropriate placement and to ensure foster children - particularly those with intellectual or developmental disabilities or identifying as LGBTQ - receive the services and supports that meet their needs.
