Public Library Statistics

Oregon Public Library Statistics

Since 1914, the State Library of Oregon has collected and published annually data on collections, circulation, staffing, facilities, technology, and other statistics from all legally established public libraries in Oregon. The reporting period for public library statistics aligns with the state fiscal year, from July 1 through June 30 each year.

To view, visualize, and download Oregon Public Library Statistics from FY2010-present, please visit our dataset on the Oregon Open Data Portal.

Data from the last several years are also made available in the Excel spreadsheets below. Both sources are updated with data from the most recently completed fiscal year by February 1 each year:

*Typical service measures for most public libraries were heavily disrupted during COVID-19 pandemic-related closures, and during other periods of reduced library access and usage. Please note that data from these periods may not be fully representative of typical public library services in Oregon.

Looking for older library data? The State Library of Oregon is now pleased to share the entire run of Oregon library statistics-related publication via our Digital Collections repository. These exist as:

  • Statistics of Oregon Free Public Libraries…” (1914 – 1929)
  • Public Libraries in Oregon (1930 – 1947)
  • Directory of Oregon Libraries (1948 – 1976)
  • Directory and Statistics of Oregon Libraries (1977 – 1992)
  • Oregon public library statistics (Excel files) (1992 – present)

Since 1988, much of this data has also been included in the national Public Libraries Survey dataset, an effort coordinated by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). To access the Public Libraries Survey datasets going back to 1992, please visit the IMLS website.
