Board Service

Supporting local communities

The Building Codes Division of the Department of Consumer and Business Services supports seven different advisory boards. These boards assist the division in carrying out its mission of ensuring safe construction practices while promoting a positive business climate. Members of these boards are vital participants in statewide decision-making and have the opportunity to assist in developing a wide variety of important governmental policies. Major issues range from licensing, enforcement, education, conservation, and safety – all of which are critical to the ongoing success of the state of Oregon.

Board members provide expert knowledge, advice, and recommendations concerning several areas: licensure standards; education and experience qualifications of licensure applicants; standards for professional and industry practice, competence, and conduct; vigorous enforcement of these standards; disciplinary hearing process for violation of professional licensing laws or rules by licensees; and revisions to the rules and regulations necessary to carry out the provisions of the licensing laws. Although many board members are licensed in the profession or industry represented by the board, every board has one or more positions reserved for public members who serve a vital role as representatives of the public interest, generally, and as consumers. Public members bring a unique background and perspective that is invaluable as the board conducts its wide range of duties.

The governor makes appointments to most of these boards, subject to confirmation by the state Senate. The governor is committed to ensuring that all boards and commissions represent the growing age, racial, and gender diversity of the state. This is an amazing opportunity to pool our collective viewpoints, visions, and hopes for Oregon – and all citizens are welcome and encouraged to serve.

Government works best when citizens are involved and engaged in their communities. Service on a state board or commission is an important way to make a positive difference and become actively engaged in state government. Are you interested in serving as a volunteer citizen board member? Contribute your professional knowledge and expertise or perspective by serving on one of Building Codes Division’s advisory boards. The division seeks new members as current terms expire and continuously recruits qualified applicants who undergo a thorough background and reference check before being recommended for appointment.
