What is a statewide alternate method?

A ruling on the acceptability of any material, design, or method of construction as not covered by the state building code. A person or a building official may request an alternate method ruling.

How to request an alternate method

What happens next?

If the division elects to accept the application, program staff work with the petitioner, local building officials, and industry advisory groups to help develop an alternate method proposal.

The appropriate advisory board provides a recommendation on the scientific and technical facts of the proposed alternate method.

The division considers the board recommendation and issues the final decision on the alternate method ruling.
