Volunteering and Internships

Volunteer and Internship Guidelines

Prospective volunteers must complete an application and pass a background check. Final approval is determined by the Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC).

Background Clearance

All volunteers must be cleared through the Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) before approval.

Eligibility Requirements
  • No outstanding warrants or pending criminal charges
  • No misdemeanor convictions within the past two years
  • No felony convictions or incarceration within the past five years (some programs may allow exceptions)
  • No convictions related to contraband, explosives, or assisting escape
  • No DUII within the past two years or Driving While Suspended within the past year
Volunteers must:
  • Be a U.S. citizen, legal resident, or have a valid visa
  • Be at least 18 years old (unless there is no direct contact with adults in custody)
Applicants with Prior Criminal Convictions

Individuals with prior convictions may still be eligible if additional criteria are met:

  • No parole or probation violations within the past required timeframe
  • Approval from supervising parole officer (if applicable)
  • Approval from the facility functional unit manager
