ATTENTION:

You cannot go to a DMV office to renew or replace your plates.
  • Renew or replace your plates at DMV2U or by mail.  Follow instructions for your situation below.
  • If renewing online or by mail, we will mail you a temporary permit to use until your stickers arrive.  Your stickers will be delayed, but should arrive sometime in January, 2021.
  • If you are applying for new plates online or by mail, it may take 9 weeks to receive them.
  • You should not be cited for expired plates or trip permits at this time.

You may only register your vehicle if you have an Oregon title in your name.

Choose a section below for information on how to renew or replace your registration and how to transfer plates.

Note: Some renewal fees increased on January 1, 2020.

If you are the current or previous owner listed on the title of the vehicle the plates were removed from, the registration period listed on the plates transfers with the plates onto the vehicle.  If you are not the current or previous owner of the vehicle the plates were removed from, you must provide all registration requirements and registration fees along with the $6 plate transfer fee.

You can transfer your plates to another vehicle if they are:

  • Going on the same type of vehicle.
    • For example, motor home plates can only be transferred to another motor home.
  • A style currently issued by DMV, special plates or custom plates; and
  • Readable.

If you are not sure if your plate can be transferred, contact DMV.

How to Apply

Online

Though it typically takes about 3 business days, it can take up to 2 weeks to receive your stickers or registration card if you renew online.  If you do not receive it by then do not cancel your check; instead contact DMV to check the status of your renewal.

By Mail

Due to the many mailed-in applications we are receiving, it can take 9 weeks to issue your stickers or registration.  Please do not cancel your check and wait to contact DMV to check the status of your renewal until it has been over 10 weeks since you mailed it.

You do not have to renew the registration if the vehicle is not being driven. When you want to use the vehicle again, you can renew the registration at that time.

Warning: Some cities and counties do not allow unregistered vehicles to be parked on the roadway.
