ODOT is improving its RealTime system to make roads safer and help Oregonians get where they're going more efficiently by providing real-time traffic information to drivers. We installed RealTime Variable Advisory Speed (VAS) signs along a busy stretch of Interstate 5 south of downtown Portland from the Ross Island Bridge to Terwilliger Boulevard.
This project:- Installed 12 RealTime VAS signs at two locations – three signs per direction near SW California Street (south of Exit 298) and near S Hamilton Street (south of Exit 299). These two installations include building new truss sign bridges over the freeway.
- Upgraded the variable message sign on I-5 north near Iowa Street (south of Exit 298).
RealTime VAS signs:- Calculate and display advisory speeds based on conditions ahead using traffic sensors, weather sensors, and cameras along the roadway.
- Improve safety and traffic flow by reducing crashes and their associated delays.
- Help prevent rear-end crashes by warning drivers of slowdowns ahead.
- Give drivers advance notice about speed changes ahead due to current conditions so they can make real time decisions.
