About the Project

Safety improvements start in 2026

This project has been many years in the making. With roughly 10,700 vehicles travel through the area on average per day, it has a history of fatal and serious injury crashes. The majority of the crashes involved young or aging drivers.

With this project, we are:

  • Designing and constructing a roundabout at the OR 22 and Kings Valley Highway intersection.
  • Straightening Perrydale Road south of the intersection with OR 22 to make it easier for drivers to see oncoming traffic.

We plan to realign a section of Perrydale Road north of OR 22 to route traffic through the roundabout in the future when we have funding.

High crash intersections

crash iconWhen compared with similar intersections across the state, the Perrydale and Kings Valley Highway on OR 22 have a higher amount of fatal and serious crashes and were in the top 5% SPIS sites before 2020.

Our safety funding is used for all highways in Oregon. We use a tool called the Safety Priority Index System (SPIS) to help us prioritize locations for safety improvements. This system flags high-crash locations in the state that could be potential projects for our safety program.

The SPIS scores every 0.1-mile segment of our state highways and local roads based on traffic volume and the number and severity of crashes. Every year the traffic team reviews the top 10% of these state highway sites to find what safety improvements can be done with the funding available. The amount of funding we have available only covers about the top 5% of the SPIS sites.

Intersection improvements

Take a look at what we're doing at each intersection by clicking on the titles below or the "+".

The current OR 22 and Perrydale Road intersection can be difficult for drivers to see oncoming traffic. Since 2014, there have been serious injury crashes every year at this location. When compared across the state, this intersection has a crash rate that is one and a half times higher than other intersections like it.

To help make the intersection safer, we're changing how the southern portion of Perrydale Road connects to OR 22. After construction, Perrydale Road will straighten before connecting to OR 22. This will make it easier for drivers to see oncoming OR 22 traffic.

The current OR 22 and Kings Valley Highway intersection is a hub of activity – the Coville Road and Smithfield Road intersection is just north of it, creating many connections and roads converging in one area. It can be a confusing area for drivers, and it can be hard to see oncoming traffic.

Since 2007, there have been serious injury crashes every year at this location. When compared across the state, this intersection has double the crash rate of other intersections like it.

After construction, the OR 22 and Kings Valley Highway intersection will be a roundabout. The roundabout will make it easier for drivers to see oncoming traffic and it will also:

  • Eliminate some of the conflict points where crashes could happen.
  • Reduce the number of crashes that result in injuries.
  • Increase fuel efficiency due to reduced stops.
