Multnomah Falls Viaducts (Historic Columbia River Highway/U.S. 30)

Construction Phase

Region 1: Portland metro and Hood River County (Multnomah)

Two 100 year-old elevated roads at Multnomah Falls need repairs to continue providing access. The elevated roads – called viaducts – carry vehicles and bicycles to the iconic Multnomah Falls and the Multnomah Falls Lodge along the Historic Columbia River Highway.  The east viaduct is open. We completed restorations to the historic Multnomah Falls deck of the west viaduct in May 2025.

Columbia River Gorge Construction: I-84 and U.S. 30 Historic Columbia River Highway

Impacts

Traffic Impact

Thank you for your patience while crews restored and rehabilitated the historic viaducts. Finishing touches, final striping and clean up continues through summer.
  • Over the summer expect to see flaggers directing traffic for final cleanup, finishing touches and to install final striping on the road.
  • This summer expect periodic single lane closures on the east viaduct until 9 a.m. while crews complete finishing work.
  • The Historic Columbia River Highway viaducts, east and west of Multnomah Falls, are open to vehicles less than 35 feet long and bicycle travel only. Both are closed to pedestrians because the highway is too narrow.
  • Other sections of the Historic Columbia River Highway will remain open. I-84 is open; expect delays.
How to access Multnomah Falls:

A Timed Use Permit will be required for visitors using the I-84 (Exit 31) Multnomah Falls parking lot between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. from May 22 through Sept. 7, 2026. Information about the permits is available at https://www.recreation.gov/timed-entry/10089144.

Visitors are encouraged to take transit to avoid parking delays. The Gorge has multiple public and private bus options to reach areas like Multnomah Falls. Visit RideCATbus.org or ReadySetGOrge.com to find more information about routes, schedules and tickets.

Construction Impacts

We are excited to announce that the Historic Columbia River Highway (U.S. 30) has reopened east of Multnomah Falls!

This concludes the last of two significant closures in our two-year project to repair two 100 year-old elevated roads east and west of Multnomah Falls. Finishing the work marks a significant milestone toward restoring and extending the service life of the original “King of Roads” through the Columbia River Gorge from Troutdale to The Dalles. Visitors will be able to see the viaducts on their next trips through the Gorge on the Historic Columbia River Highway.

Over the summer, travelers using the east viaduct can expect to see flaggers directing traffic while crews clean up the site, complete finishing touches on the railings and install permanent striping.

Since work began on the east viaduct in October 2025, crews patched the original decorative concrete, reinforced the structural stability of the aging structure and poured a new road surface. The repair work ensures the structure continues carrying traffic near Multnomah Falls for years to come while preserving the historic integrity so the viaducts, with their unique railings and stone support walls, look similar to when they were built in 1914.

In May 2025, we opened the west viaduct between Wahkeena Falls and Multnomah Falls after finishing similar restoration work.

Both closures allowed crews to repair the viaducts, which are elevated roadways contributing to the Historic Columbia River Highway's National Historic Landmark status. The repair work ensured their preservation and increased the amount of weight they can support.

West viaduct:

  • We completed restorations to the deck on the historic Multnomah Falls west viaduct in May 2025.
  • The west viaduct is open to all traffic, including bicycles and vehicles. The viaduct remains closed to pedestrians.

Public transit and private buses are available to take you to the lodge without the hassle of parking. Visit RideCatBus.org or ReadySetGorge.com  to find more information about routes, schedules and tickets.

Access to Multnomah Falls via the I-84 parking lot at Exit 31 is open. Parking spaces are limited.

Schedule

Construction began summer 2024 and continues through summer 2026 while crews complete final clean up, finishing touches and install permanent striping on the road.

The west viaduct reopened to traffic in May 2025.

Work to repair the east viaduct began on October 6, 2025 and reopened in May 2026.  The project schedule is subject to change.

Additional Information

Multnomah Falls (I-84) Timed Use Permits at Exit 31 May 22 - Sept. 7, 2026:
The U.S. Forest Service has reinstated its seasonal Multnomah Falls (I-84) Timed Use Permit system for I-84 Exit 31. Between May 22 and Sept. 7, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., a Multnomah Falls (I-84) Timed Use Permit is required for each personal vehicle accessing Multnomah Falls from Exit 31. Permits must be obtained in advance to park at the lot on the Interstate at Exit 31. A limited number of permits will be available for same-day pickup without a transaction fee at the Gateway to the Gorge Visitor Center in Troutdale and the Cascade Locks Historical Museum.

Over the next several years, we have many construction projects planned on I-84 between I-205 and Hood River, and on the Historic Columbia River Highway between Troutdale and Hood River.
