Astoria-Megler Bridge Painting Phases 2 and 3

​The purpose of the project is to paint the structure above the guardrail and rehabilitate steel components as required. Work includes removing the original lead containing paint plus any subsequent added paint, re-painting, repairing areas where corrosion has damaged the steel, and making other repairs as required. ​

Traffic Impact

​During construction plan for single lane traffic with flaggers and up to 20 minute delays.  Lane delays will be allowed anytime on weekdays and weekends.  Travelers should drive through the area with caution.  Oregon State Police will be enforcing the speed limit through the work zone.

​This project is located on the Astoria Megler Bridge on U.S. 101(Pacific Coast Highway).  The bridge is a 3 span steel truss structure, 2,464 feet long built in 1966.



The purpose of the project is to paint the structure above the guardrail and rehabilitate steel components as required. Work includes removing the original lead containing paint plus any subsequent added paint, re-painting, repairing areas where corrosion has damaged the steel, and making other repairs as required. 

The project began in 2009.

Cost and Funding

​$20 million

Additional Information

Phase 2 has been completed and included the coating of both of the towers and all steel below the deck of the main span between the towers. The work started in March, 2016 and was completed in the summer of 2018. 

Phase 3 consists of recoating the deck trusses outside of the main span and will commence in 2021.

The work includes building containment structures to prevent any paint and debris from entering the Columbia River.
