None at this time. Construction is being done off the roadway and is focused on the earth work to build the new county connector road, Julia Road.

Construction Impacts

Due to the ice storm earlier this year, we are experiencing some delays. We will need to complete the project in stages. The construction of the OR 551 left turn lane and paving the new county connector road will be delayed and completed Spring 2022.

Construction activities will take place at different times:
  • Most of the construction will be done at night.
  • Some daytime work will take place at the OR 551 and Ehlen Road intersection.
  • Small portions of Ehlen Road will likely need to be constructed under 24 hour flagging because the road is not wide enough to maintain two lanes of traffic.

Traffic and movement through the work zone will be controlled by flaggers and lanes will be clearly marked.

Detours may be needed if the construction of Julia Road is not complete before we install the traffic separator. The detour routes will only be necessary for traffic accessing Ehlen Road and Boones Ferry Road. The traffic on OR 551 will mostly be unaffected.

Access for pedestrians, including those with disabilities, will be available and identified through or around work zones.

About

Enlarged project mapIn working with  Marion County, we identified that the OR 551 and Ehlen Road intersection needs safety improvements. The current intersection layout creates congestion as a car is waiting to make a left turn.

To address the safety and operational issues, we will add left turn lanes on Ehlen Road approaching OR 551 in both directions.

EhlenRdCrossSection.pngTo reduce congestion and improve operations at the intersection, the left turn lane will be protected by a concrete traffic separator on the west side of Ehlen Road. This separator will restrict left turns to and from Boones Ferry Road onto Ehlen Road.

Because of the new concrete separator, left-turning traffic on the north side of the Boones Ferry/Ehlen Road intersection will use Keil Road. Left-turning traffic on the south side of the intersection will use the new county connector road.

As part of the project, we will need to remove some trees and bushes on OR 551 and Ehlen Road NE. This will allow us to expand OR 551 to include a new right turn lane onto Julia Road NE and widen Ehlen Road NE to add two new left turn lanes onto OR 551.
