Region 3: Southwestern Oregon (Medford, Jackson)

This study examines safety, operational and structural needs of the Interstate 5 Medford Viaduct and sets the course for future widening and strengthening of the 3,200-foot structure.

Details

About

This is a planning study for the Interstate 5 viaduct that runs through Medford. The study will develop a priority list of specific improvement projects for the viaduct, focusing on capacity, safety, and changes to the local road network.

Cost and Funding

No funding has been identified for either design or construction.

Construction is estimated at more than $80 million.

Benefits

The Medford Viaduct was constructed in 1962, when traffic volumes were much lower than today. This study will lay the groundwork for the widening of the viaduct (for shoulders and a third lane) and seismically strengthening it. These changes will make the viaduct safer for motorists and extend its useful life.

The study has six primary objectives:
  • Protect the viaduct’s function;
  • Develop concepts to improve safety and maximize operational efficiency;
  • Evaluate the need for capacity improvements to address future needs based on the adopted comprehensive land use plans of Medford and Jackson County;
  • Identify potential local system enhancements that maintain connectivity and complement the viaduct’s function;
  • Coordinate the study’s efforts with other plans and projects in the study area; and
  • Prioritize viaduct improvements with consideration for potential funding mechanisms.
