About
ODOT will design and manage the construction of a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of U.S. 20 and Ward/Hamby roads east of Bend. The project went to bid in the fall of 2021, with construction to follow into the summer of 2022.
Ward / Hamby Road is the first North to South route outside the City of Bend. Motorists use this route to avoid the 27th St. corridor and its many signals. At their intersection with US20 travelers experience significant delays on the side streets, coupled with congestion that leads to aggressive driving and crashes,
Roundabouts are a proven safety countermeasure for reducing crashes at intersections and is the preferred solution in the Deschutes County Transportation Plan.
Construction of a roundabout at this location will improve safety by reducing fatal and injury crashes. According to research data, roundabouts can reduce fatal and all injury crashes by about 82 percent.
