Traffic Impact

​Traffic Impacts expected when construction begins in 2027:

• Expect temporary traffic delays near Exit 63 during construction.
• Westbound I-84 will be temporarily reduced to one lane for a few months in 2028 while crews connect the new bridge to I-84.
• Eastbound I-84 will be temporarily reduced to one lane while crews build a new culvert that routes stormwater from the new bridge to a treatment site.​
  

Construction Impacts

The new westbound bridge will be constructed north of the existing bridge to minimize traffic impacts. Once the new bridge is built, I-84 westbound will be temporarily reduced to one lane for a few months while building the connection to the new bridge. Both travel lanes will reopen once this transition is complete and the old bridge will be demolished. Using the existing bridge while the new bridge is built will limit traffic impacts by keeping westbound I-84 open throughout construction.

Schedule

​Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2027 and continue until fall 2029. The new bridge will be built from 2027-2028 before the existing bridge is demolished in 2029.

Benefits

​Replacing the existing I-84 westbound Union Pacific Railroad bridge preserves the highway system and enhances seismic resiliency.

What Problem Will This Improve?

​The existing bridge is more than 70 years old, does not meet current seismic standards and the concrete surface is deteriorating. The existing bridge supports cannot be seismically upgraded because rebuilding them would be too expensive. Repouring the concrete surface would also require westbound vehicles to detour so crews can close the bridge. Replacing the entire bridge will bring it up to current seismic standards while allowing westbound I-84 to remain open.
