What Problem Will This Improve?
The last paving project in this area was in 2007. The road surface is raveling, cracking and developing potholes in several areas.
Seven bridges in this area need repairs and resurfacing, and two dozen culverts are damaged and at risk of failure.
Over the years, there have been many crashes in this area, including rear-end crashes and lane departure crashes. Some of these crashes resulted in serious injuries or fatalities.
What is the solution?
Paving: Grind and pave the full width of the highway from milepost 2.7 to 9.7 (Delmar Lane to Cedar Point Road), install guardrail, reflective posts (delineators) and new striping.
Center turn lane: Restripe about four miles of highway between Green Acres Lane and Fernwood Road to provide a lane for vehicles making left turns. Center turn lanes make it safer to make left turns along the highway and reduce the number of rear-end crashes.
Rumble strips: Install centerline rumble strips between Fernwood Road and Cedar Point Road (milepost 7.3 to 9.6). Centerline rumble strips improve safety by alerting drivers when they begin to drift across the yellow line into oncoming traffic.
Bridges: Resurface roadway (deck) and replace expansion joints on seven bridges from the U.S. 101 junction to Beaver Creek.
Culverts: Replace or repair 24 damaged culverts within the project area.
