About
Crossover traffic and NE Frontage Rd on-ramp closure (March 2026 through late summer 2026)
I-84 is reduced to one lane in each direction while eastbound traffic is sharing the westbound bridge. The NE Frontage Rd on-ramp to eastbound I-84 at the Elowah Falls Trailhead parking lot is also closed.
Lane closures and NE Frontage Rd on-ramp closure (late summer 2026 to fall 2026)From late summer through fall 2026, the eastbound and westbound bridges will be open but expect periodic single lane and shoulder closures in each direction until fall 2026. The NE Frontage Rd on-ramp to eastbound I-84 at the Elowah Falls Trailhead parking lot will also remain closed.
Historic Highway State Trail Closure (spring 2026 through summer 2026)
Note: The nearby Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail is now open between John B. Yeon and Toothrock Trailheads.
How did we determine the detours are the minimum necessary to complete construction?
We evaluated six construction options. All required months of traffic impacts on I-84 and the Historic Highway State Trail. Ultimately, we selected the option that offered the lowest construction risk, highest durability, fewer traffic and trail impacts, and lower cost.
Crews, cranes and other construction equipment need a large work area to remove the existing bridge and construct the new bridge. Both directions of traffic are sharing the westbound bridge while crews work to remove and rebuild the eastbound bridge.
Location
I-84
|
Exit 37 near Warrendale.
Cost and Funding
$32 million
Contractor
Legacy Contracting, Inc.
Benefits
The existing eastbound bridge is aging and in poor condition with ruts and bumps. There are also limited routes available to efficiently travel around the bridge if it were ever damaged during an earthquake.
The new bridge will meet current design standards, which will increase the lifespan of the highway and protect public safety by allowing it to better withstand an earthquake.
Additional Information
Multnomah Falls (I-84) Timed Use Permits at Exit 31 May 22 - Sept. 7, 2026:
The U.S. Forest Service has reinstated its seasonal Multnomah Falls (I-84) Timed Use Permit system for I-84 Exit 31. Between May 22 and Sept. 7, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., a Multnomah Falls (I-84) Timed Use Permit is required for each personal vehicle accessing Multnomah Falls from Exit 31. Permits must be obtained in advance to park at the lot on the Interstate at Exit 31. A limited number of permits will be available for same-day pickup without a transaction fee at the
Gateway to the Gorge Visitor Center in Troutdale and the
Cascade Locks Historical Museum.
Over the next several years, we have many construction projects planned on I-84 between I-205 and Hood River, and on the Historic Columbia River Highway between Troutdale and Hood River.
