Cornelius Pass Hwy & U.S. 30 ITS Improvements

Design Phase

Region 1: Portland metro and Hood River County (Various Cities, Multnomah, Washington)

The Cornelius Pass Hwy & U.S. 30 ITS Improvements Project focuses on making Cornelius Pass Highway (Highway 127), between U.S. 26 and U.S. 30, safer and more efficient for travelers. The project includes upgrades to lighting, signal equipment, and signage, as well as new intelligent transportation system (ITS) devices such as traffic cameras, variable message signs, and an activated intersection warning system, bringing it up to the latest Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) standards.

Impacts

Construction Impacts

Construction in the project area is designed to minimize disruptions for travelers. During the construction phase, travelers can expect:
  • Overnight Work - Likely taking place from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., nighttime travel lane closures take advantage of lower traffic volumes to reduce delays.
  • Single Lane Closures - Only one lane will be closed at a time to avoid full roadway closures and detours.
  • Flagging at Signals - Flaggers will be on-site during active construction.
  • Shoulder Closures - Temporary shoulder closures may be utilized during various construction activities that occur just off of the roadway.

Schedule

  • December 2024 - Winter 2025: Public awareness and outreach

  • Late 2025 - Early 2026 (TBC): Construction
Timelines are estimated and will be updated throughout the course of the project.

    • New VMS on Cornelius Pass Highway near the U.S. 26 off-ramp.
    • Upgraded VMS on U.S. 30 eastbound, just east of Cornelius Pass Highway, will be replaced with a modern system.
    • New VMS on U.S. 30 westbound, just east of Cornelius Pass Highway, will be added.
  • Update existing traffic signal heads - New signal heads with reflectorized backplates will be added to all signals to improve visibility for travelers.
  • Update existing street lights - Street lights will be upgraded to LED bulbs to improve visibility and pedestrian safety.
  • New cameras - New Cameras will enhance system operations and provide real-time road updates via ODOT’s traveler information portal, TripCheck.com.
