Coos Bay and North Bend ADA curb ramps project (Phase 2)

Design Phase

Region 3: Southwestern Oregon (Coos Bay, North Bend, Coos)

This project will improve pedestrian facilities by building ADA-compliant sidewalk curb ramps at approximately 90 intersections along U.S. 101 and Oregon 540 in Coos Bay and North Bend.

Details

About

Problem: Many sidewalk ramps in Coos Bay and North Bend are difficult to navigate for people using wheelchairs or those who have visual impairments.

Solution: New curb ramps will be constructed that meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Benefits: ADA-compliant curb ramps will allow smooth and safe travel along sidewalks and streets for individuals in wheelchairs, parents pushing strollers and people making deliveries. Yellow truncated domes provide a tactile walking surface for people with visual impairments.

Construction impacts

Construction may require intermittent lane and shoulder closures. Some areas will be restricted to nighttime lane closures. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed.

Other impacts may be determined during project’s design phase.

Schedule

Construction is tentatively scheduled for 1-2 years, starting in summer 2025.

Location

U.S. 101 |

Most of the curb ramp replacements are located in three areas:

  • U.S. 101 North Bend city center (MP 234.9 to 235.6), 15 locations from Michigan Avenue to Washington Avenue
  • U.S. 101 Coos Bay city center (MP237.77 to 238.98), 31 locations from Fir Street to Kruse Avenue
  • Oregon 540 in North Bend (Cape Arago Highway, MP 0.0-2.2), 38 locations from the U.S. 101 intersection to Fir Street.

The final six intersections are located along other areas of U.S. 101: East Bay Road (MP 233.46), Lewis Street (MP 236.28), Newmark Street (MP 236.49), Koos Bay Blvd. (MP 237.38), an unmarked road south of Hemlock Avenue (MP 237.69), and Ivy Hills Road (MP 239.6).

Throughout the design phase, some locations may be added or removed from this list.

Cost and Funding

Total estimated cost: $36,830,000

Additional Information

This is Phase 2, the second of two projects that will upgrade curb ramps in the Coos Bay/North Bend area. Construction on the first project (Phase 1) is scheduled for 2023-24.
