About
The intersections in the project area have had a high number of crashes and fatalities. Due to the volume of traffic in this area, installing roundabouts and a left-turn lane is the safest option.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, roundabouts are safer than traditional intersections. Locations with roundabouts see fewer fatalities, injuries and crashes. Other benefits include lower maintenance costs and increased fuel efficiency.
With the initial project funding, we started to design a roundabout at the OR 126 and Huston Road intersection.
We received a $30 million grant for OR 126 safety improvements in the project area. The grant was awarded on 1/10/2024. An agreement has not been signed and funds have not been obligated. Learn more information and check in on the status by
visiting our Federal Executive Actions webpage.
Once we receive the federal funding, we'll continue design and construction to:
- Install roundabouts at the Huston Road and Ellmaker Road intersections. Installing a roundabout at a rural stop-controlled intersection can reduce fatal and injury crashes by as much as 82%.
- Install a left-turn lane at Lakeside Drive.
- Widen the shoulders and install a two-way left turn lane between Huston and Ellmaker Roads.
- Build a separated multi-use path on the north side of the highway between Huston and Lakeside Drive.
- Upgrade the rail crossing at Huston Road with concrete panels, turn lanes and new rail crossing equipment.
