About

This project will prevent serious injury and fatal crossover crashes along U.S. 97. The project will include:

  • A concrete island traffic separator on U.S. 97 at the intersection of O'Neil Highway/Pershall Way which will restrict vehicles from turning left onto or crossing the highway from the side streets. Access to U.S. 97 from O'Neil Highway and Pershall Way will be restricted to right-in-right-out only. Vehicles will still be able to turn left onto O'Neil Highway and Pershall Way from U.S. 97 via openings in the median island.
  • Installing tall concrete median barrier from the O'Neil Highway/Pershall Way intersection north to just south of Galloway Avenue, and restricting Canal Boulevard to right-in-right-out only.
  • Restriping the lanes on southbound U.S. 97 to remove the passing lane.
  • Replacing the overhead warning beacon at O'Neil Highway/Pershall Way with new advanced intersection warning signs mounted on the roadside of U.S. 97.

What Problem Will This Improve?

Serious injury and fatal crashes occur with increasing frequency on U.S. 97 at the intersection of O'Neil Junction, with many of the most serious accidents being those which occur when people cross over the highway or make a left turn movement. Installing a raised median would eliminate crashes by physically separating northbound and southbound travel lanes and restricting through and left turn movements related to these types of crashes.
