I-84: Rieth Interchange and Umatilla River Bridges

Construction Phase

Region 5: Eastern Oregon (Umatilla)

We are repairing four bridges. Work includes repairing deck surfaces and approaches, and installing new joints. These repairs will extend the life of the structures.

Impacts

Traffic Impact

Expect reduced speeds to 55 mph with lane and shoulder closures between mileposts 207 and 210, at the Rieth Road interchange and the Southgate/U.S. 395 interchange.

Construction Impacts

To prepare for and safely accommodate work on the bridges in 2027, we will construct crossovers in 2026.

Crossovers reduce traffic to a single lane in each direction by shifting traffic from one side of a divided road to the other side that is not under construction.
Crossovers protect workers from live traffic, reduce conflicts by giving workers more room and require fewer setups and removals of traffic control devices during construction.

Schedule

For the week of Oct. 19:
Crews continue building traffic crossovers to accommodate construction next year.
Crossover construction and site preparation are scheduled to be completed in November 2026.
Bridge repairs will take place in 2027.

About

The bridge approaches (transitions between the road and bridge) and bridge decks need repairs and upgrades to the wearing surfaces. An existing deck seal is losing its effectiveness, allowing moisture to penetrate the surface and reducing the driving surface lifespan.

Cost and Funding

The estimated project cost through construction is $9.7 million.

Benefits

Bridge deck and approach slab preservation work will improve driver safety, decrease traffic disruptions for maintenance work and extend the service life of the bridges.
