Portland Metro and Surrounding Areas Operations Upgrades

Construction Phase

Region 1: Portland metro and Hood River County (Clackamas, Multnomah, Washington)

This project improves general operations of the transportation in the region by replacing and upgrading equipment that is beyond its service life.

Impacts

Traffic Impact

Lane and shoulder closures are expected on I-405 in Portland.

Directional closures are anticipated at night in Fall. More information to follow.

Construction Impacts

Details including dates, locations, and detour routes for the overnight directional closures will be posted here.

General impacts:
  • Most work will take place at night when traffic volumes are lower.
  • Three sections of I-5 in one direction at a time will close for several nights in fall 2026. The closure areas are in Wilsonville, Tigard, and North Portland. Signed detours will be in place.

Schedule

Construction is expected to finish by the end of 2026.

About

We are replacing and upgrading equipment that is beyond its service life in the Portland area. Improvements include replacing variable message signs (VMS), improving sign structures, and restriping. This work helps us maintain operations of the transportation system and supports a smoother and safer ride for travelers.

Replacing VMS signs

We are replacing three VMS signs on I-5. Crews will be removing and installing signs over lanes of traffic, so closures are needed to provide a safe environment for workers and the traveling public.

The closures will take place from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., for up to two nights at each location. Work will be sequenced so that only one section of I-5 is closed at a time. Signed detour routes will be in place to help travelers get around the closures.

Neighbors may hear some minor construction noise during the overnight work. However, no unusual levels of noise, dust, vibration, or lighting are expected.

Location

I-5

Cost and Funding

$1.67 million

Benefits

  • Improved reliability: Replacing equipment that is beyond its service life helps keep transportation equipment working reliably.
  • Safer, smoother travel: Improving lane striping will help increase lane visibility and maintain a safer, smoother travel experience for drivers.
