Highway striping is essential for road safety. In harsh winters on the eastern side of the state, wear from snowplows and deicer chemicals often fades road lines, creating hazards during bad weather.
The project involves installing durable striping in high-traffic areas that need frequent maintenance, such as I-84 between La Grande and Pendleton.
As part of the project, travelers will also see new, wider white lane lines in the Grande Ronde (Exit 248/Spring Creek Road to Exit 259/U.S. 30) and Burnt River (Exit 330/Cement Plant Road/Plano Road to Exit 345/Lime/U.S. 30 Business/Huntington) canyons.
These 8‑inch‑wide markings are designed to improve visibility in tight curves and help discourage lane changes in areas with higher crash rates. Similar treatments are already in place elsewhere in Oregon and in other western states.
These locations have previously received standard safety improvements, including warning signs and barriers. The wider lane markings provide an additional safety measure to help drivers navigate challenging curves. ODOT will continue monitoring crash data to evaluate the long‑term effectiveness of these improvements.
