I-5 Boone Bridge Joint Replacement

Construction Phase

Region 1: Portland metro and Hood River County (Wilsonville, Clackamas)

ODOT is replacing two aging bridge joints in the northbound lanes of the I-5 Boone Bridge in Wilsonville, which serves about 120,000 travelers daily.

Impacts

Traffic Impact

Work on the I-5 Boone Bridge Joint Replacement Project is postponed until next year due to contractor availability.  The temporary bridge joints are functioning, which will allow us to complete the work in 2027.  We will continue to monitor these joints regularly.

Construction Impacts

When construction begins, travelers can expect lane and ramp closures on I-5 northbound. We evaluated options on how to install the new bridge joints and selected the option that keeps travel lanes open during the day.

More information will be available prior to construction.

Schedule

Construction is anticipated in 2027.

About

ODOT plans to replace two aging bridge joints in the northbound lanes of the I-5 Boone Bridge in Wilsonville, which serves about 120,000 travelers daily. After repeated repairs since 2008, the two bridge joints are in need of replacement. They are now monitored by our maintenance team, who inspects them frequently.

Work to replace these joints is planned for 2027. Installing new bridge joints improves safety for drivers and reduces maintenance costs. They also reduce our environmental impact by sealing off the joint and decreasing stormwater runoff into the river.

What Problem Will This Improve?

After repeated repairs, two bridge joints in the northbound I-5 lanes are in need of replacement. The joints are beyond their service life.

Safety: When steel beams in the joint fail, they can become a safety hazard. Replacing the bridge joints is critical for the safety of the traveling public.

Reduced Costs: The bridge joints require ongoing maintenance inspections and have previously malfunctioned, creating safety issues for travelers and unplanned maintenance work with travel lane closures.

Environmental Stewardship: The joint's rubber glands are not functioning and water, polluted from the surface of the road, is running directly into the Willamette River.
