About
Due to recent fatalities, we're making safety improvements to two areas in Salem:
- OR 22 and Edgewater Street connection.
- OR 99E/Liberty Street NE and River Street NE intersection.
At both locations, we're looking to upgrade or add new:
- Signs.
- Striping.
- Street lighting.
- Sidewalk, curbs and curb ramps.
At the OR 99E/Liberty Street NE and River Street NE intersection we're also looking to:
- Add extended curbs, or bulb outs. Extended curbs create a shorter distance for pedestrians to walk when they cross the street, meaning less time spent in the road. It's also easier for drivers to see pedestrians, even if cars are parked along the side of the road.
- Add pedestrian activated flashing lights called rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFB). RRFB's help alert drivers to stop when a pedestrian is crossing the road ahead.
This work is funded through our vulnerable user crash response program. This program received $10.6 million in HB 2017 funding, approved by the Oregon Transportation Commission.
We use the term "vulnerable road user" to describe a person who isn't protected by an outside shield, like in a car or truck, when they're traveling. This includes people walking, biking or rolling.
We're planning to build and will have a better idea about the construction schedule and cost as we get further into design.
