About

Highway 99 (OR 99W) in south Corvallis is five lanes wide and runs through an urban area with a mix of residences and businesses. Due to the heavy demands on this corridor, the roadway function and facilities need to change to meet the needs of all current users.Enlarge Map

We have been working on changes that better support all modes of travel and improve safety for people driving cars, people bicycling and people walking.

Together with the city of Corvallis, we have already installed and implemented several improvements, including:

  • Radar speed feedback signs to create speed awareness.
  • Static Advanced Pedestrian Warning Signs to improve pedestrian awareness.
  • Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacon (RRFB) installation to enhance safety for pedestrians.
  • Installed new, more brightly colored pedestrian crossing signs at RRFB crossings.
  • Speed reduction signs to help slow traffic.
  • Increased police enforcement.
  • Removed pedestrian island vegetation to improve visibility.
  • Streetlight lumens increased on west side to improve visibility.
  • Green and white pavement markings to improve safety for path users.
  • Variable Message Sign (VMS) installations to better inform users of conditions.
  • Upgraded white striping to discourage cars from lane shifts at the crosswalk and added yellow diagonal striping to discourage cars from using the turn lanes near the crossing. Completed in 2020.
  • Rebuilt 58 street corner sidewalk ramps to current Americans with Disabilities Act standards between SE Chapman Place and SW McKenzie Avenue. Learn more on the project page.

  • Remove current pavement and repave, improving the driving surface.
  • Apply new striping to the road to improve visibility.
  • Upgrade several curb ramps to meet current ADA standards.
