Cost and Funding

U.S. 26 | ODOT Maintenance crews.

U.S. 95 | Granite Consturction, Idaho.

Benefits

A chip seal consists of embedding rock chips into emulsified oil, then compressing it onto the pavement with several passes of a heavy roller. Compared to an asphalt overlay, it is a lower cost solution that helps preserve and extend the useful life of the existing highway surface. Highway preservation funds are limited, and chip seal applications allow more pavement miles to be kept in good condition.
