About
We're partnering with the cities of Nehalem and Wheeler to identify safety improvements that can be constructed
as part of future projects when funding allows. Our goal is to identify practical, community-supported improvements that make it safer and easier for people to walk, roll, bike, and cross the roadway.
Potential improvements may include new signs, marked crossings, pedestrian-activated signals, curb-ramp upgrades, bicycle improvements and intersection-safety changes. The study will also consider concerns raised by community members and city staff, including access to local businesses, housing, transit stops, parks, community services and other important destinations.
Why are we doing this work?
We want to identify the improvements that matter most to the community before future road projects are planned, so we are ready to act when opportunities come up. For example, a future curb-ramp update could be paired with new crosswalk striping and pedestrian signs. By defining these priorities now, we can work with the cities to make the most of limited resources and pursue funding as it becomes available.
This work will help prepare Nehalem and Wheeler for future road projects, maintenance activities, grant opportunities and other investments. This study does not have finding for final design or construction, but it will provide a shared set of priorities that can guide future decisions.
The improvements identified during this study will help the project team be ready to move forward when future projects or grants make them possible.
Your feedback matters – your input helps shape what gets built!
Community feedback will help identify where people experience safety concerns or barriers while walking, biking, rolling, waiting for transit, or crossing U.S. 101. Feedback from people who live, work, visit and travel through Nehalem and Wheeler will help us work with the cities to identify the improvements that matter most.
