About Geologist Exams

Overview of examinations

The Board requires applicants to pass the national ASBOG exam—which includes the Fundamentals of Geology and Practice of Geology sections—to become registered geologists in Oregon. This exam is given twice a year across the country, with dates set by ASBOG.

ASBOG exam structure and eligibility

The ASBOG exam has two parts, and each part lasts four hours. To find out if you can take one or both sections, check the Board's Qualify for Exams page. You can also learn more about the ASBOG exam on the National exam provider page.

Application deadlines and procedures

If you are applying to take the ASBOG exam for the first time, your application must reach the Board's office at least 100 days before the exam date. This deadline is strict—no exceptions are allowed. If you want to retake a section you did not pass or if you missed sitting for exam when first approved by the Board, then you must send a resubmittal application to the Board. These applications are due 75 days before the exam date, with no exceptions. For more details about applying and to access the online Applicant Portal, visit the Qualify & Apply for Exam page on the Board's website.

Engineering Geology Specialty Examination

The Board also offers a special exam for people who want to become Certified Engineering Geologists. To see if you can take this exam, look at the Qualify & Apply for Exams page. Applications for this specialty exam are also due 75 days before the test date, with no exceptions.

Exam dates and application information

For all exam dates and application deadlines, see the Exam Dates and Fees page.

Certified Water Rights Examiners License

Oregon Registered Geologists can also apply for the Certified Water Rights Examiners license. The Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying (OSBEELS) manages this exam and the registration process. The Board can confirm your geologist registration to help you apply to OSBEELS for the exam.
