Board appointment information

The Oregon State Board of Geologist Examiners is made up of four geologists, all registered to practice in Oregon, one public member, and the State Geologist (who is automatically on the Board). The Governor appoints the four geologists and the public member. The Governor can also remove any member if they are guilty of misconduct, incompetence, neglecting their duties, or any other valid reason. The State Geologist is also the Director of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) and is appointed by the governing board of that state agency.

Who can be a Board member?

Board members must be U.S. citizens and have lived in Oregon for at least one year before they are appointed. They must also continue to live in Oregon while serving. The Board tries to include people with different geological backgrounds, and at least one geologist must have the Certified Engineering Geologist specialty registration.

How long do members serve?

Each member serves a three-year term. Members stay in office until their term ends or until a new person is appointed by the Governor. Successors are chosen in the same way and also serve for three years. No one can serve more than two three-year terms in a row.
