Construction and Traffic Impacts

Photo of the Astoria-Megler Bridge What you can expect during construction

We're still finalizing our plan for what construction will look like, but we know that road work can be disruptive to your commute. Learn about the impacts we're considering and make sure you're signed up to receive email updates to stay informed.

We are considering:

  • Work to happen September 2027 through May 2028. This work is weather-dependent and our schedule may change.
  • Nightly full bridge closures for up to 35 nights, Sunday night through Friday morning, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
These closures may be back-to-back or could vary depending on the weather and crew availability. We'll try to give you a five-day notice before the nighttime full bridge closures. When the bridge is closed:
    • Emergency vehicles will be able to cross.
    • Vehicles can take detours and alternate routes to get around the full bridge closure.
  • Daytime single lane open with flaggers directing traffic for up to 90 days, Monday morning through Thursday night, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. These lane closures may be back-to-back or could vary depending on the weather and crew availability. During the lane closure, you can expect:
    • Long delays.
    • Flaggers directing traffic on U.S. 30, U.S. 101 and on the Astoria-Megler Bridge.
  • Fully opening the bridge during the weekends, from 6 a.m. on Friday through 7 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Construction noise and debris.
  • A temporary work platform for crews to work off the bridge.

Potential alternate routes

Learn how you can get around the full Astoria-Megler Bridge closures by clicking on the titles or plus signs below.

You can get around the U.S. 101 Astoria-Megler Bridge closure using the Lewis and Clark Bridge. By taking this bridge, it could add:
  • About 2.5 hours of travel time each direction to your drive.
  • Roughly 114 miles of traveling to your trip.

Passenger vehicles can get around the U.S. 101 Astoria-Megler Bridge closure by taking the Wahkiahum Ferry. By taking the ferry, it could add:

  • About 2 hours of travel time each direction to your drive. This timing could depend on the ferry's schedule. The ferry currently runs hourly between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. and currently has a $5 fee for a one-way trip.
  • Roughly 75 miles of traveling to your trip.

In Astoria, roughly 20,268 vehicles travel along U.S. 30 near the U.S. 101 bridge on-ramp on average per day, including 1,439 trucks.

During construction, expect long delays on U.S. 30 and U.S. 101:

  • If you're driving westbound on U.S. 30 and you want to:
    • Get onto the Astoria-Megler Bridge, use the right-hand lane as you wait to be flagged across the bridge.
    • Continue traveling westbound, use the left-hand lane.
  • If you're driving eastbound on U.S. 101 and you want to:
    • Get onto the Astoria-Megler Bridge, use the left-hand lane as you wait to be flagged across the bridge.
    • Continue traveling eastbound, use the right-hand lane.
While we expect traffic to back up on westbound U.S. 30 and eastbound U.S. 101, we don't anticipate many traffic backups on the Washington side of the Astoria-Megler Bridge.
