Potential Solutions

Ideas for improving how you move on U.S. 101 in the study area

Today, U.S. 101 through the Taft District has four to five lanes. The study is looking at design options to repurpose the available space on the existing road to:
  • Slow speeding traffic.
  • Make it easier to cross the road on foot.
  • Make it safer to ride a bike.
  • Allow parking near businesses.

  • From SW Beach Ave to SW 48th Street
  • From SW 48th Street to SW 51st Street

The potential design options for these two sections of U.S. 101 use the available space on the existing road.

The project is looking at two design options for improving U.S. 101 between SW Beach Avenue and SW 48th Street. Both options would repurpose existing road space to improve safety and comfort for people walking and bicycling. Both design options include:

  • New sidewalks to address the gap along the east side of the highway.
  • Two new midblock crossings near Wheel House Pizza and Rusty Truck Brewing. These enhanced crossings would include concrete pedestrian refuge islands and curb extensions to shorten the crossing distance across U.S. 101.
  • Improved bus stops on both sides of the road.

Existing Road

The existing road between SW Beach Avenue and SW 48th Street has:

  • Two travel lanes in each direction.
  • A two-way center turn lane.
  • No bike lanes.
  • No on-street parking.

Design Option #1

This option would repurpose the existing road to create:

  • Two northbound travel lanes and one southbound lane.
  • A two-way center turn lane.
  • Bike lanes on both sides of the road, with extra space between bikes and traffic to increase safety and comfort for bicyclists.
  • On-street parking along the east side of the road between Chevron and Best Western.

Design Option #2

This would repurpose the existing roadway to create:

  •  One travel lane in each direction.
  •  A two-way center turn lane.
  •  Bike lanes on both sides of the road, with extra space between bikes and traffic to increase safety and comfort for bicyclists.
  •  On-street parking on both sides of the road, between Anchor Inn Resort and Lincoln City Storage.

The project is looking at a proposed design for improving U.S. 101 between SW 48th Street and SW 51st Street. This design would repurpose the existing road space to improve safety and comfort for people walking and bicycling. This design includes:

  • Repurposing one travel lane in each direction to make room for bike lanes on both sides of the road.
  • Preserving the existing center median and left-turn lanes on the approaches to SW 48th and SW 51st Streets.
  • Preserving existing on-street parking pockets to support access to local businesses.

The existing road between SW 48th Street and SW 51st Street has:

  • Two travel lanes in each direction.
  • A center turn lane.
  • No bike lanes.
  • Limited on-street parking.

Proposed Design

The proposed design between SW 48th Street and SW 51st Street would repurpose the existing road to create:

  • One travel lane in each direction.
  • A center turn lane.
  • Bike lanes on both sides of the road, with extra space between bikes and traffic to increase safety and comfort for bicyclists.
  • Preserves existing on-street parking pockets on both sides of the road.

How will these improvements affect U.S. 101?

The proposed improvements would change how some of the existing road is used. These changes aim to improve safety and comfort for people walking and bicycling while continuing to support driving, freight, transit and local businesses.

  • Safety: Continuous bike lanes, improved sidewalks, more places to cross the street and increased separation from traffic would make it safer and more comfortable to walk and bike along U.S. 101.
  • Parking: On-street parking would increase in some places, which could support local businesses and visitors.
  • Transit: Improved bus stops would make it easier and more comfortable to use public transportation.
  • Travel lanes: Some of the road that is currently being used for vehicle lanes would be repurposed for other uses, such as bike lanes, parking and pedestrian improvements.
  • Traffic: Traffic analysis shows that the proposed changes would not cause serious changes to traffic conditions along U.S. 101. The highway would continue to experience congestion during the busiest summer days, similar to today.
