Project Description

Two intersections with Oregon 18 in Dayton (Oregon 233/ SE Lafayette Highway and SE Ash Road) have historically been identified as being within the top 10% of safety priority sites for many years. From January 2015 to December 2019 this site was within the top 5% of safety priority sites. During that time there were 62 reported crashes on the segment spanning from milepost 49.89 to 50.10.

To improve safety, we are constructing a roundabout that will reduce crash risks.

Expected Outcome

The new roundabout will replace the current stoplight-controlled intersection, sever the west leg of Ash Road and convert the east leg of Ash Road to right-in/right-out. We’ll have a better construction schedule and cost estimate as we get further into the design.

Community Benefits

Safety

According to the Federal Highway Administration, roundabouts are safer than traditional intersections. Locations with roundabouts can see a 90% reduction in fatalities, 76% reduction in injuries and a 35% reduction in all crashes.

The roundabout will naturally slow traffic going through the intersection. By reducing the speed of traffic, the severity of crashes should decrease.
